أحببت هذا الكتاب، وأحببت مؤلفه جيروم جيروم (1859- 1927) وستحب الكتاب ومؤلفه أنت الآخر- فنحن شعب يستطيع أن يقدر الفكاهة الرفيعة، يذكرني جيروم دائماً بكاتبنا الساخر محمد عفيفي، يستطيع جيروم أن يرسم شخصياته ببراعة مذهلة حتى لتراها تتحرك أمامك تنبض بالحياة، من منا يمكنه أن ينسى شخصيات روايته "ثلاثة رجال في قارب" (التي ظهرت ترجمتي لها في روايات الهلال عام 1988). ثم انك لا تستطيع أن تقرأ لهذا الرجل ثم تنساه، ستفتش بالتأكيد- مثلي- عن كتب اخرى له، لن تنسى اسلوبه الطلي، وطريقة سرده البهيجة، كتابته فكهة حبيبة، ولكنها في الوقت نفسه جلدة وحميمة، حتى ليخيل إليك أنه يتحدث إليك أنت شخصياً، ستعيد قراءة كل كتاب وقع تحت يديك من كتبه مرات ومرات، وفي كل مرة ستقترب منه أكثر وسيقترب منك أكثر، فتكتشف بين طيات كلماته شيئاً طريفاً جديداً، لم تنتبه إليه قبلاً، سيحدث هذا مع كل قراءة جديدة، هو يقتنص الفكاهة من كل ما هو عادي ومألوف، من كل ما يمر عليك في حياتك اليومية دون أن تلحظه، فيصيبك بالدهشة، إذ تجد أن افكاره قد طافت بذهنك وأنت لا تدري- هي بسيطة، تبدو بسيطة (أو تافهة) ولكنها في الحق عميقة وصادقة، ومؤكداً ليست تافهة- وكيف تكون ذلك وقد طافت بذهنك أنت الآخر.
