كان في نية ديكارت ان يجعل كتاب المبادئ في ستة أجزاء:
"مبادئ المعرفة- مبادئ الأشياء المادية- السماء - الأرض النبات والحيوان- الانسان".
ولكنه لم يستطع اتمام الجزئيسن الأخيرين لقلة ما لديه من التجارب فقنع بالاجزاء الأربعة الأولى. فكتاب المبادئ ينقسم إذن أربعة أجزاء: الأول وعنوانه : " مبادئ المعرفة البشرية" يحيو على ا لتقريب ما يحويه كتاب التاملات لولا أنه بأسلوب آخر، ولولا أن ما وضع في الواحد مطولا وضع في الاخر مختصرا وبالعكس والجزء الاول هذا ، إذا قيس بالثلاثة الاخرى وجد عبارة عن نحو عشر الكتاب كله وهو أقل قدر من الميتافيزيقا لزم لكل فيزيقا في ذلك الوقت. والجزء الثاني وعنوانه "مبادئ الأشياء المادية" بين ديكارت فيه لم يعتبر الأجسام إلا مادة ممتدة طولا وعرضا وعمقا، ولم يعتبر في تغيراتها التعاقبة إلا حركات خاضعة لبعض قوانين بسيطة جدا.
وعنوان الجزء الثالث: " في عالم الشهادة" du monda visible. وهو بحث في الميكانيكا السماوية يصف ديكارت فيه حركة الأرض والكواكب الأخرى حول الشمس.
وعنوان الجزء الرابع: " في الارض" ويفسر فيه ديكارت الثقل وظاهرة المد والجذر وخواص المغناطيس الخ، ويبقى الجذبة بين الاجسام لان فكرة الجذبة فكرة مبهمة.
