عثرت على كتاب في "مبادئ الفلسفة" قسمه المؤلف إلى قسمين: أبان في القسم الأول منه موضوع الفلسفة وفروعها، وذكر كلمة عن كل فرع، وختمه بفصل في تاريخ الفلسفة من مبدأ نشأتها إلى الآن- وذكر في القسم الثاني النظريات الفلسفية المعروضة على بساط البحث وحكى باختصار المذاهب المختلفة فيها.
والكتاب يقدم للقارئ صورة مصغرة للآراء الفلسفية قديمها والحديث، ويحدد معنى "الفلسفة" وموضوعها، تلك الكلمة التي يكاد يختلف الناس عندنا في فهم معانيها بقدر عدد رءوسهم- ولم يأل جهدًا في تبسيط الموضوع والتغلب على صعوباته، ليكون سهل التناول لجمهور المتعلمين.
رأيت أن أنقله إلى العربية، وأغراني على ذلك: صغر حجمه، وطرافة موضوعه عند قراء العربية، وبذل المؤلف جهده لتسهيل الموضوع.
وقد رأيت أن المؤلف لم يذكر كلمة ما عن الفلسفة العربية وتاريخها فرأيت إتمامًا للفائدة أن أذكر كلمة في ذلك أقرنها بما كتبه المؤلف عن تاريخ الفلسفة. ووضعت على ما كتب المؤلف كلمات في ذيل الصحيفة قد أشرح بها غامضًا أو أبين مصطلحًا.
وذيلت الكتاب بترجمة صغيرة لأشهر من ورد ذكرهم في الكتاب أبين فيها جنسه وتاريخ حياته، وربما ذكرت بعض مبادئه.
