تكون الحياة كلّ شيء، ثمّ فجأة يصبح الموت كلّ شيء. فهل ستصبح الحياة كلّ شيء من بدايتها إلى نهايتها ذات يوم؟ ثمّة شيء يلفّ دمشق داخله، شيء أسود، مغبرّ، ضيّق ولا هواء فيه. لم يعد ممكناً استعادة دمشق القديمة, وربّما المقايضة العادلة هي أن نمنح كلّ شيء، من الرّوح إلى الجسد، لاستعادة دمشق بمساجدها، أسواقها، كنائسها، أديرتها، أزقّتها، أناسها، فقهائها، علمائها وأدبائها. كما علينا قتل كلّ الأوغاد إلى آخِر واحد فيهم, أولئك الذين يجذبهم مغناطيس الفجيعة والموت. سأنخرط -إن اقتضى الأمر ذلك- مع الدّمشقيِّين في القتال، فأنا لم أعد ناسخاً ولا مغربيّاً من فاس فقط، فأنا، ساعة بعد ساعة، أوسّع من سيادتي، من سيادة نسياني ليبقى كلّ شيء وراء ظهري كأنّه ألوان هاربة. بعدها لن يحدث الموت، بل شيء أكثر دعة، اسم آخر للحياة، تلك هي تضحيتي التي يمكن منحها لأمّ الشّام. فهل جئت إليها لأمضي إلى حال سبيلي شهيداً؟ لله عاقبة الأمر، وبيده محتوم النّفع والضّرّ. دهش جميع النّاس، ملوكاً ورعيّة، من الانتشار السّريع لأتباع الباطنيّة، ومن شموخ أنف الفرنجة، وفساد رهط من الشّاميِّين أنفسهم، وتملّكهم الطمع في تملّك المعاقل الإسلاميّة. كيف اتّفقت طغمة «برهام» مع الكفّار الخارجيِّين؟ مع هذا الشّموخ والغطرسة قويت هيبة الجهاد والمواجهة المعارضة. هذا ما يصدر عن كلّ أريب حازم في رأيه ولبيب طامع في ضبط البلاد وإعادة أحسن نظام إلى مكانه الذي كان فيه.
