روايات جولسوورثى ( 1867 – 1933) ، ربما تكون الآن وثائق تاريخية أكثر منها إنجازات أدبية، وتأتى على رأس هذه الروايات الثلاثية الأشهر The Forsyte Saga، ملحمة آل فورسايت كما يسميها البعض، وهى معروفة على نطاق واسع داخل الأوساط الأدبية والفنية الإنجليزية باعتبارها بداية الثورة على الشكل التقليدى للمجتمع الأرستقراطى، فقد كشف جولزوورثى فيها عن عيوب هذه الطبقة التى بدت متماسكة من الخارج، وعن سلبياتها وما أصابها من تفكيك. وقد تكون الفكرتان الرئيستان فى الرواية هما، أولا: الواجب فى مواجهة الرغبة وهو ما تمثل فى سومز فورسايت وأخته وينفر فورسايت اللذين تبنيا فكرة الواجب على حساب الرغبة، وبالمقابل أيرين وعائلة الجد جوليون الذين تبنوا فكرة الرغبة على حساب الواجب، أما الفكرة الثانية وهى تعاقب الأجيال والتغير المستمر فقد تمثلت فى الجيل الثالث من عائلة فورسايت الذى أتى بأفكار مغايرة بعض الشىء للجيل الثانى ومغايرة تمامًا للجيل الأول من العائلة . لقد حسم جولزوورثى الصراع فى نهاية هذا الجزء لصالح فكرة التغير والثورة على الأفكار التقليدية، واستبدل بها أفكارًا مرنة تحترم رغبات الإنسان وعاطفته أكثر من أى شىء آخر.
