"بيبرس" (1223-1277 ميلادية) القائد العظيم الذي أوقف زحف جحافل المغول الكاسحة في عين جالوت (والتي تعتبر نقطة تحول في التاريخ)؛ وهزم الحملة الصليبية السابعة للملك لويس، ملك فرنسا، ليصبح فيما بعد السلطان الشركسي الأول الذي وحّد مصر وسورية ونشر نفوذ السلطنة المصرية (المماليك) في البحر الأبيض المتوسط وما وراءه.
راوي القصة هو مؤرخ وكاتب سيرة بيبرس المخلص: محي الدين بن عبد الظاهر، الذي بقي معه للقسم الأكبر من حياة بيبرس وشهد العديد من أعمال سيده، ليكتب فيما بعد العمل التاريخي الشهير "سيرة الملك الظاهر" الذي أصبح واحداً من أعمال المراجع الرئيسة للمؤرخين.
تحكي الرواية الأحداث التي اختبرها السلطان العظيم والتي شكلت شخصيته وحولتها ليصبح مقاتلاً وحاكماً عظيماً.
