Recent advances in electrophysiology have helped to clarify both basic and complex mechanisms of normal and abnormal conduction of the cardiac impulse and the production, maintenance, and termination of arrhythmias. This new body of knowledge has immediate relevance for clinical electrocardiography, since better explanations can now be offered of certain elecrocardiographic patterns. Similarly, newer developments in the fields of nuclear cardiology, echocardiography, and angiography have helped to validate some concepts in clinical electrocardiography while invalidating others.
Accordingly, a new introductory book on the essentials-of interpretation of clinical electrocardiograms was thought to be both timely and necessary. This book is aimed at students who seek a firm ground upon which to build their understanding of electrocardiographic interpretation. Most important is correlation of the information presented here with the specific clinical setting of which the electrocardiogram is one part, since only by clinical correlation is a diagnostic tool such as the electrocardiogram properly interpreted.
Principles of Clinical Electrocardiography, now in its 11th edition, will continue to be revised and reissued triennially.Comments from readers about both books will be welcomed, since it is the authors' intention to keep pace with advances in this scientific field.
