تسبح في هذا الكتاب مع الفيلسوف العملاق "سورين كيركجارد". فقد ولد الفيلسوف الدانماركي الذي تنسب إليه مدرسة الفلسفة الوجودية المؤمنة في كوبنهاجن عاصمة الدانمارك. وكان الطفل السابع في أسرة بورجوازية ميسورة الحال. اشتهر عنه أنه محاور بارع، خفيف الظل له قريحة متوقدة وفي جوانية نفسه كان يعاني اكتئاب عميق، ويحس بحزن خانق.
كرس كيركجارد حياته، ووقته، وجهده لهدف وحيد ألا وهو تأسيس المسيحية كديانة على أسس إنسانية بالمعنى الفلسفي. أو بعبارة أخرى وضع الأساس الإنساني للمسيحية. ولذا يراه بعض الباحثين كمفكر أنثروبولوجي. وقد قدم هذه الرؤية عبر مراحل ثلاث: المرحلة الأولى كتب فيها العديد من الكتب تحت اسم مستعار من بينها خطوات على طريق الحياة وفي معظمها كانت أعمالًا فلسفية وأدبية ونفسية، المرحلة الثانية كتب فيها عدة كتب مخصصة أساسًا لفهم الدين ومن بينها كتاب أعمال الحب وكتبها باسمه الحقيقي، المرحلة الثالثة كتب فيها مناضلًا ضد سلطة الكنيسة الواقعية ومن بينها كتابه مدرسة المسيحية.
