إن الدافع الحقيقي وراء كتابة هذا الكتاب هو اكتشافي أنه يوجد أعداد كبيرة من الرجال غير واثقين في ذكوريتهم، بدرجة أو بأخرى. وقد كتبت في كتاب "الصورة المكسورة: استعادة اكتمال الشخصية خلال الصلاة الشافية"، عن موضوع الذكورة المكبوتة أو غير المؤكدة كما يظهر في الإضراب العصبى لدى المثليين، لكن الإضراب العصبى لدى المثليين هو فقط أحد الطرق التى تظهر بها هذه المشكلة المتعددة الوجوه والمنتشرة على نطاق واسع وهى مشكلة في الهوية الذكورية، وهدفى فى هذا الكتاب هو إظهار المشكلة كما تظهر فى الأشكال الأخرى وكيف أن معاناة هؤلاء الأشخاص من الممكن أن تشفي خلال الصلاة من أجل الاكتمال الشخصى، وهذا هو الغرض الرئيسي من هذا الكتاب، وهو الحاجة لأن نتعلم كيف نصلي من أجل هذا الشفاء المؤكد، والنتائج الإيجابية لمثل هذه الصلوات عظيمة جداً، بالإضافة لذلك، سأشير إلى بعض الأساليب -النفسية، والتاريخية، والفلسفية -لهذا الداء الثقافي المتزايد، الوباء المتعددة الأبعاد، والذى أدعوه " الأزمة في الذكورة". وفي النهاية سأفحص طبيعة الذكورة نفسها، من خلال بعض جذوها النفسية والفلسفية واللاهوتية، وبالطبع سوف أضع في الإعتبار، الأنوثة أيضاً، لأنه من المستحيل إعتبار إحداهما دون الأخرى، كما جاء في الأسطورة التي ذكرت في محاورة افلاطون، أن الذكر والأنثى مرتبطان ببعضها في الأصل وهما متلازمين حتى النهاية.
