يرصد هذا الكتاب الملامح الرئيسية للثقافة السائدة في مصر في الوقت الحاضر. وينتهي إلى أن الطابع الرئيسي لهذه الثقافة هو طابع عربي- سامى قادم من غرب آسيا، وهو طابع يسعى الأجانب وعلى وجه الخصوص الأنجلو أمريكيون إلى تسييده- في غفلة من "المتعلمين المصريين" - في مصر. ويؤكد الكتاب أن هذه الثقافة والحضارة المصرية التى تحمل سمات انسانية راقية أهلتها لأن تكون رافدا من روافد الحضارة المعاصرة. ويرى الكاتب أن استمرار الانقطاع نالراهن مع الثقافة القومية المصرية لا يعني سوى اندثار الأمة المصرية التى تعد أقدم أمة عرفها الشرق الأوسط القديم. ويدعو الكتاب، بالتالي إلى البدء من ثقافة الأميين المصريين، الذين يعدون أكثر اتصالا عبر التواتر بجدودهم المصريين القدماء من "المتعلمين المصريين" في سبيل تأسيس عقل مصري جديد منفتح على ما توصل إليه العقل المصري القديم وأنجزه العقل الإنساني، القديم والحديث، على حد سواء.
