تحكي الرواية عن قصة ثلاثة رجال (هاريس، ويليام، جورج) بالإضافة إلى كلبهم مونتمورينسي استقالوا من أعمالهم وزحف عليهم كبر السن وبدأ يساورهم القلق بشأن صحتهم.. فيقررون الذهاب إلى رحلة في قارب عبر نهر التايمز بين كينغستون واكسفورد حيث تتوالى المواقف المضحكة والمسلية في القصة بدءًا من الاستعداد للرحلة وحتى رجوعهم.
