هذا الكتاب ليس عرضاً تاريخياً لأحداث فترة يعتبرها البعض بدء النهضة العربية الحديثة، ولكنه يقدم قراءة جديدة تمثل وقفة متأنية وفاحصة لجانب من أهم جوانب أحداث هذه الفترة الذي هي سياسة محمد علي التوسعية، ومحاولة لإلقاء الضوء على هذه السياسة بنظرة شاملة متفحصة مع الأخذ بعين الاعتبار أن هذه المنطقة، ومنذ بدء تلك الفترة "بداية القرن التاسع عشر" أو بشكل أكثر تحديداً منذ الحملة الفرنسية على مصر سنة 1798 م، قد أدخلت في دوامة الصراعات الدولية، وأنها أصبحت جزءاً مهماً من لعبة الأمم على مسرح السياسة الدولية، وأن أي دراسة جادة لا تأخذ هذه الحقيقة بعين الاعتبار ستقود إلى نتائج خاطئة ومغلوطة.
إن من العبث البحث عن أسباب مشاكل هذه المنطقة وإيجاد تفسير سليم للهزات التي تتعرض لها في تاريخها المعاصر في ثنايا الأحداث القريبة أو في الصراعات الدولية الحالية أو النزاعات الإقليمية القائمة بقدر ما تعود جذور هذه الأسباب إلى تلك الفترة التي يعالج هذا الكتاب جزءاً هاماً وخطيراً من جوانبها. سياسة الفتح والتوسع التي انتهجها محمد علي طوال ثلاثين عاماً من حكمة الطويل لم تحظ بدراسة موضوعية ناقدة تضعها في إطارها التاريخي الصحيح.
وإن كانت هذه الظاهرة تنطبق على دراسة التاريخ بشكل يكاد يكون عاماً، فإن هذه السياسية قد ترتب عليها نتائج لا زالت آثارها تفعل فعلها في المنطقة. والأصعب من ذلك أن هذه السياسة نفسها توشك اليوم أن تتكرر بشكل ما، قد يؤدي إلى نتائج أشد خطورة وأكثر ضرراً، ومن هنا تأتي أهمية هذه الدراسة التي جاءت لتسهم في خدمة هذا الدين وهذه الأمة بالتنبيه على موضوعها من ناحية أخرى لتكون لفتة جديدة للمعنيين والمتخصصين بالاهتمام بإعادة فحص التاريخ العربي والإسلامي وكتابته بشكل علمي وموضوعي هادف إلى إبرازه على حقيقته.
