تدلّ المقالات التي كان ينشرها رئيس تحرير مجلة الجنان، سليم البستاني في السياسة والعلم والأدب والتاريخ على أن صاحبها كان مصلحاً اجتماعياً بكل ما في هذه الكلمة من معنى، جلّ اهتمامه أن يرى الهيئة الاجتماعية التي يكتب إليها صالحة تجاري روح العصر في جميع نواحي تقدمه وتمدنه.
اختص سليم البستاني بكتابة الافتتاحية للجنان منذ أنشأها ابتداءً من أول كانون الثاني 1870 حتى أيلول سنة 1884 ليعالج في حملته الأولية الأحوال الداخلية والخارجية للسلطنة العثمانية بالإضافة إلى معالجة شؤون البلدان الأوروبية ومصالح الأجانب في الوطن العربي. فلقد بلغ عدد هذه الافتتاحيات المعنونة 48 افتتاحية حملت عناوين مختلفة مثل "المساواة" "صوت الأمة" "الممالك" "مركزنا" "ومن نحن" وغيرها.
وهذا الكتاب المنقسم إلى أجزاء يضم جميع افتتاحيات مجلة الجنان البيروتية بين سنة 1870 و1884 والتي تدور مواضيعها حول تحبيذ المبادئ الصحيحة والدعوة إلى تبنيها وتطبيقها مقابل استهجان المبادئ والتحريض على نبذها وتجنبها وذلك لأن النور والظلمة لا يجتمعان.
