..إن المواطن العربي، وخاصة المتذوق للغناء والموسيقى -ورغم ما أتيح له من فرص التعرف والاستماع إلى موسيقى العراق وغنائه- يفتقر إلى الكتابات الكافية وإلى الدراسات الخاصة حول فن المقام العراقي، أو التراث الغنائي الموسيقي العراقي على وجه العموم، وعليه فإنني آمل أن يتيح كتابي هذا فرصة الإحاطة بجانب من جوانب تطور الأداء المقامي في العراق على مدى العصور المتعاقبة.
هذا الجانب، الذي لم يعتن به أحد ولم يلتفت إليه كاتب، ارتأيت أن ألج من مدخله ما استطعت، وأعني هنا (المرأة العراقية بتجربتها مع غناء المقام العراقي)، فمن الثابت لدى المتخصصين والضالعين في المقام العراقي أن هذا الفن النبيل البعيد عن الإسفاف في اللفظ والمعنى، هو فن رجولي، وأن علية المجتمع هي في مقدمة من يعشقه، فلم نجد مطرباً للمقام العراقي رافقته راقصة على سبيل المثال، ولذا كانت المرأة تهاب هذا الفن ولا تقربه، لكن ما إن حل القرن العشرين (حقبة التحول نحو الانفتاح في كل مجالات الحياة) حتى ولجت المرأة باب هذا الفن، وإن باستحياء وتردد، وقد ارتأيت التوقف عند أبرز المغنيات المقاميات ذوات التأثير الجماهيري في بغداد تحديداً، فاخترت سبع مغنيات يمثلن أجيالاً متعاقبة متسلسلة، وهن بالتحديد: صديقة الملاية، سليمة مراد، سلطانة يوسف، زهور حسين، مائدة نزهت، فريدة محمد علي، سحر طه.
ينقسم هذا الكتاب إلى بابين يحتوي أولهما على مقدمة وفصلين، يتضمن الأول منهما عرضاً عاماً لتاريخ المقام العراقي وتعريفاً به، بينما يتحدث الثاني عن حقبة التحول الممتدة من أواخر القرن التاسع عشر إلى العقود الأولى من القرن العشرين، وعن بدايات دخول المرأة كمؤدية للمقام.
وأما الباب الثاني، فيتضمن ثلاثة فصول يتحدث أولها عن أبرز المغنيات المقاميات في النصف الأول من القرن العشرين، ويتحدث الثاني عن زهور حسين فقط، بينما يتحدث الثالث عن أبرز المغنيات في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين.
