يخصّص المؤلّف الحائز على دكتوراة في الفقه المقارن من الأزهر، والذي "قدّم للمكتبة العربية أكثر من أربعة وخمسين كتاباً، وأكثر من مائة وخمسين بحثا علميا"، هذا الكتاب للحديث عن المكحول الدمشقي، ضمن إصدارات سلسلة موسوعات فقه السلف.
"كان مكحول من أهالي دمشق"، و"أصله من كابل"، "ورغم سواد جلده فقد وصفه لنا نافع بن أبي نعيم بالجمال"."لم يكن مكحول فقهياً فحسب، وإنما كان مربياً أيضاً، لأنه لا ينفع علم بلا عمل". لقد اختلف القوم بتصنيف عقيدة المكحول، فقيل عنه: "كان معتزلياً يقول بالقدر"، "وهو ينفي ذلك".
"يرى مكحول أن الجهاد فرض، ولذلك كان يأمر به ويحضّ عليه"، وكان من "الذين وقفوا أنفسهم على العلم، فأقبل عليه يعبّ منه بنهم منقطع النظير". أما الآثار التي خلّفها المكحول فهي "على نوعين: كتب، وتلاميذ وكلاهما ممتع ومفيد". "لقد كانت الحكمة تتفجر من قلب مكحول على لسانه".
بعد تقديم المؤلف للمكحول الشامي، نسبه وكنيته وولاؤه وهيئته وداره وتأديبه لتلاميذه، كما عطاؤه وعمله وعبادته وعقيدته وجهاده وطلبه للعلم وبراعته في الفتوى، وأيضاً بعد الحديث عن شيوخه وتلاميذه وكتبه ووصيته، وإبراز شيئا من كلامه وأقوال العلماء فيه، يفصّل الكاتب بحسب الأحرف الأبجدية، كل المواضيع الدينية والدنيوية التي جاء الفقيه على ذكرها، وعلى إفتائها.
