إذا كان علم النفس يدرس سلوك الإنسان ويهدف في الأساس لفهم هذا السلوك وتفسيره ومحاولة التنبؤ به، فإن أهمية دراسة سلوك الإنسان في مختلف مجالات حياته نتج عنه عدة فروع لعلم النفس نظرية منها وتطبيقية، والتي يعد علم النفس العمل والتنظيم أحد أهم الميادين التطبيقية فيها، إذ يسعى لدراسة سلوك الإنسان في العمل، فكلما تواجد الإنسان في مكان العمل تواجد في المقابل علم النفس العمل والتنظيم، ولعل دراسة سلوك الفرد في العمل كان الهدف منها في البداية زيادة الإنتاجية ومنه الزيادة في الربح المادي للمؤسسة، لكن نتيجة الدراسات المتراكمة والخاصة بسلوك العمل جعلت الكثير من الدراستا تتجه لفهم سلوك الأفراد في العمل ومحاولة تفسيره والتنبؤ به من أجل حل المشكلات التي تتعرض لها المنظمات اليوم في ظل إرتباط ذلك إرتباطاً وثيقاً بالإقتصاديات والتنمية لمختلف الدول، وهو ربما ما يجعل لعلم النفس العمل والتنظيم تلك الأهمية المنوطة به.
ومن هذا المنطلق أصبحت معرفة السلوك التنظيمي ودراسة مختلف المواضيع فيه تكتسي أهمية بالغة بالنسبة للمختصين في الإدارة والتنظيم، والتي يعد علم النفس العمل والتنظيم أحد أبرز الميادين التطبيقية التي تنهل من السلوك التنظيمي، في ظل مقاربة معرفية تهدف بالأساس لتحقيق التوافق المهني للعامل والذي لن يتأتي إلا من خلال إدراك وفهم والتنبؤ بسلوك الأفراد عن طريق الدراسة المعمقة والمستفيضة التي أكدها علماء السلوك التنظيمي والإداري.
