للوهلة الأولى تبدو عبارة (الماضي) بريئة من المقاصد الرمزية ومحايدة عن التضمينات القديمة التي اعتادت الجماعات البشرية على الإعتقاد بها والإحتكام إليها والشروع منها، حين تلوح في أفق حياتها عواصف الأزمات السياسية والتوترات الدينية والإنقسامات الإجتماعية والإحتقانات النفسية والإنعطافات التاريخية، بإستثناء كونها تشير إلى صيغة زمنية مضى أوانها وانقضى عهدُها وتصرّم أمدها، وبالتالي فهي عبارة تقع خارج السياقات الإجتماعية والحضارية والتاريخية الحديثة والمعاصرة.
بيد أن الحقيقة هي إننا لو أنعمنا النظر بتلك الكلمة (الماضي) سنجدها مثخنة بالدلالات ومكتنزة بالمعاني ومشحونة بالإيحاءات المبثوثة في كل زاوية من زوايا الوعي، والقارة في كل ركن من أركان الواقع.
فهي، والحالة هذه، من العبارات التي تضمر وتخفي أكثر مما تظهر وتفصح، وتكتم وتستر أكثر مما تعلن وتبيح، لا بل يمكن القول أنها عبارة ملتبسة المعنى وإشكالية الدلالة وغامضة الإيحاءات بإمتياز، خصوصاً في المجتمعات العتيقة / القديمة التي تمتاز مكوناتها بتعدد الإيمان / المذاهب، وتنوع الأعراق / الأقوام، وتباين القبائل / العشائر وتغاير اللغات / اللهجات.
ولذلك فقد شبّه المؤرخ الفرنسي (فرانسوا هارتوغ) دلالة مفهوم الماضي بمثابة خزان "من التصورات الخيالية للأفعال الممكنة، حيث ننطلق من أساطير الأصل إلى ذكريات حديثة العهد، من إنفصال الأرض عن السماء إلى تثبيت حدود الجماعة، من الإلهي إلى الإنساني، من المجرد إلى العياني، من العام إلى الفردي".
