يعد التعلم التعاوني من الإستراتيجيات الحديثة، التي تهدف إلى تحسين وتنشيط أفكار التلاميذ الذين يعملون في مجموعات، يعلم بعضهم بعضاً، ويتحاورون فيما بينهم بحيث يشعر كل فرد من أفراد المجموعة بمسؤوليته تجاه مجموعته، ويُدرك الكثير من المربين والمعلمين أهمية التعلم التعاوني، أو العمل في مجموعات، وما لهما من دورٍ بارزٍ في تنمية مهارات التواصل لدى المتعلّمين، وزرع بذور التعاون، وخلق روح الفريق لديهم.
ومن زاوية أخرى يجب إكساب المعلمين في إعدادهم مفهوماً تربوياً يتجاوز مجرد النفعية، ويحفز على السؤال والتفاعل وبحث الفرضيات المختلفة، وتتمثل إحدى المهام الجوهرية للتدريب الأولي والمستمر للمعلمين، في تنمية الصفات الأخلاقية والفكرية والوجدانية، وأساليب التدريس وإستراتيجياته لكي يستطيعوا تنشئة طلبتهم على الخصال الحميدة.
لكن ومن خلال معاينة تجارب عدة في الفصول الدراسية، تبرز مشكلات عدة، تظهر لدى محاولة المعلّم تنفيذ الأنشطة التعاونية، وتشكيل مجموعات العمل، فنجد أنَّ هذه المجموعات تُعيق تقدم بعض الطلبة هذا إن لم يكن غالبيتهم، مما يدفع الطلبة إلى رفض العمل ضمن المجموعة، والتفرُّد بالرأي، والتشاحن، والسعي نحو التنافس بدلاً من التعاون.
وبشكل عامّ فإنّ العمل داخل المجموعات تجعل المتعلّم يدرك أنّ معرفته ليست ملكاً خاصّاً به، بل هي ملك المجموعة التي يعمل فيها.
