"أكتاب آخر عن ابن خلدون؟ أجل! ولكنه ليس كالكتب التي ألفت عنها مشرقاً ومغرباً، سواء بالعربية أو باللغات الأعجمية، بل هو "ينسخها"، إن كان للنسخ معنى في هذا المقام، أو قل يجبها، على غرار جب الإسلام لما قبله. هو ليس كالكتب والدراسات العديدة التي رأت في ابن خلدون مفكراً حداثياً أو مبشراً بالحداثة أو مهيناً لها، ورأت فيه مؤرخاً متميزاً بنظره الثاقب في زمن التقليد والاجترار...".
"لعلنا لا نجانب الصواب إذا اعتبرنا النص الخلدوني مركز ثقل معنوي فريد في الخطاب العربي المعاصر، نظراً إلى موقعه المتميز من الجدل الدائر حول التراث والحداثة. فهو من النصوص القليلة التي "نجحت" في الانقلاب من "تاريخيتها" والالتحاق بهذه الأطروحة المعاصرة أو تلك، لتؤدي فيها وظيفة "المبرر التراثي الأصيل" الذي يسمح لها بادعاء مشروعية تاريخية. لقد أخضع النص الخلدوني لقراءات عديدة، وفهم بالانطلاق من مرجعيات أيديولوجية مختلفة، ما حجب - أو كاد - حقوقه الدلالية الخاصة ونوعية انتظامه في صراع الاختيارات المعرفية المتباينة التي شهدها الفكر الإسلامي في القديم، ونسبت اليه في المقابل معان تقربه من تخوم الحداثة العربية وشروطها الإشكالية ذات الثنائيات المتناظرة، وهي معان أنتجتها قراءات حداثوية، صادرة عن وعي عربي إسلامي متأزم أربكته الحداثة الوافدة، فراح يبحث عن نص تراثي يحتمي به من هذا الوافد ومن خطر هيمنته، مقدماً بذلك مؤشراً جديداً من مؤشرات تأزمه، وهو التوظيف الأيديولوجي للتراث.
ولا يمكن أن يفهم الحضور المتزايد للنص الخلدوني اليوم، في الخطاب العربي الحداثوي، إلا باستمرار هيمنة المنطلقات التقليدية في القراءة والتأويل. وهي منطلقات تراهن على أن المعنى الحقيقي في النص هو ما أجاد القارئ استخراجه منه، ولا اعتبار للوظيفة الدلالية التي تؤديها بنية مشكلة تشكيلاً محدداً، فنتجاهل بذلك حقيقة تاريخية".
