في كتابها (الحياة في بيوت فلسطين) تسبر "ماري إليزا روجرز" أغوار التاريخ الاجتماعي لفلسطين، أو ما قد يسميه البعض منَا المعيشة اليومية في البيوت لعموم الناس القاطنين في مدن فلسطين وقراهل إبان الفترات السابقة على الانتداب البريطاني (1917- 1918م).
لقد سطرت المؤلفة هذا الكتاب خلال منتصف القرن التاسع عشر (1855- 1859م)، كاشفة عن تفاصيل ودقائق الأنماط المعيشية للفلسطينين في تلك الفترة من الزمن، مع بعض التركيز على المناطق الشمالية من فلسطين، لا سيما حيفا والبلدات والقرى الشمالية منها، لكن الكتاب بفصوله الأربعة عشر غطى معظم مناطق فلسطين وتحدث عنها.
ما يميز هذا الكتاب فضلاً عن كونه كنزاً من المعلوملت ومنطلقاً لمعرفة تلك الحقبة التاريخية البالغة الأهمية عن كثب، هو التعرف على الذهنية الدينية الرومانسية التي دمغَت آراء وأفكار المثقفين الأوروبين عموماً والانجليز خصوصاً حول "الأرض التي تفيض لبناً وعسلاً". وشعب الله المختار والمضطهد في آن واحد، قبل أكثر من (70) عاماً من صدور وعد بلفور وحوالي (90) عاماً مما أنزله هتلر بيهود المانيا التي احتلتها في أوروبا، أما الأهم من ذلك كله هو إحياء الذاكرة الجمعية لكل الفلسطينين حيثما كانوا، في الوطن وفي الشتات..
