يأتي هذا العمل الدامغ من المؤرخ جمس رستن James Reston للأحداث المحورية لسنة 1492م، وهي سنةٌ احتد فيها طموحٌ سياسيٌ جارف، إزداد فيها إرهابٌ مفرط باسم الدين في إسبانية، وجموحٌ نحو المغامرة، وإخضاع أمم أُخرى، تجَمّع كلٌ ذلك في أعظم إمبراطورية في ذلك العصر.
ويؤرخ هذا الكتاب لأحد أكثر العصور همجيّة في تاريخ الإنسانيّة، إنّها سنوات محاكم التفتيش تُركويمادا، لقد لجأ الملك فردناند والملكة إزابلا إلى الكاهن توماس تُركويمادا، عضو الرهبنة الدومنكانيّة، في محاولة للتحرر من نير الفاتكان، وإحكام قبضتيهما على شبه الجزيرة الإيبرية.
فحثّهما تُركويمادا على إنشاء محاكم تفتيش تُثبت سلطتهما على كلّ إسبانية، وبخاصة في حملتهما على المسلمين، في غرناطة، وخُيِّر المسلمون عند سقوط غرناطة بين الإرتداد إلى النصرانيّة، أو القتل، أو النفي، ثمَّ ألقى تُركويمادا بضراوته على يهود إسبانية، الذين عاشوا بأمن وأمان في عهد المسلمين، وأجبرهم على الخيار ذاته، فغادر أكثر من 120.000 يهودي ديارهم.
وصَوّر المؤلّف بأسلوبه الآسر اللاعبين الرئيسيين في تلك الحقبة، بِوَصف يحبس الأنفاس، وصوّر الجمال الصارخ لشبه الجزيرة الإيبرية، وصوّر وخشية محاكم التفتيش الإسبانية الرهيبة؛ ويصف الكتاب عصراً اشتد فيه في أوروبة شرك النشاط السياسي الديني الذي أسس لولادة أوروبة الحديثة، وبإحكام قبضة فردناند وإزابلا على شبة الجزيرة الإيبريّة، فقد استبقا تأسيس دولة حديثة بسلطتها المركزيّة وهويتها الجامعة.
ونظر المؤلف إلى ما وراء أحداث سنة 1492، فوجّه الإنتباه إلى الإستكشافات الجغرافية الجديدة، وما تعد به من مستقبل قد وُلِد في تلك السنة، وتحوّل الملكان، بعد أن أحكما سلطتهما بقبضة من حديد على إسبانية، إلى العالم الجديد وإلى تأسيس إمبراطورية - وإلى قبطان بحر شاب اسمه كرستُفُر كُلومبُس.
