الكاتب " جيمس رِسُتن " صحفي ومؤرّخ، أمريكي من أصل اسكوتلاندي، انتشرت مقالاته في كبريات الصحف الأمريكية، وصدر له 13 كتابا، وكان وثيق الصلة بالطبقة السياسية، مطلعاً على كثير مما يجري وراء الكواليس، منذ عهد الرئيس الأمريكي الأسبق نيكسون ووزير خارجيته كيسينجر، ويكشف كتابه هذا عن حرصه الكبير على "توثيق" ما يخط قلمه، لا سيما وأنّه يذكر تفاصيل الوقائع والأحداث، ويشير إلى ذلك التو الكاتب " جيمس رِسُتن " صحفي ومؤرّخ، أمريكي من أصل اسكوتلاندي، انتشرت مقالاته في كبريات الصحف الأمريكية، وصدر له 13 كتابا، وكان وثيق الصلة بالطبقة السياسية، مطلعاً على كثير مما يجري وراء الكواليس، منذ عهد الرئيس الأمريكي الأسبق نيكسون ووزير خارجيته كيسينجر، ويكشف كتابه هذا عن حرصه الكبير على "توثيق" ما يخط قلمه، لا سيما وأنّه يذكر تفاصيل الوقائع والأحداث، ويشير إلى ذلك التوثيق ما اعتمد عليه من مصادر إنجليزية وأمريكية وغيرها، وذكرها في نهاية الطبعة الإنجليزية من الكتاب، حيث شغلت 6 صفحات. وهذا ممّا يستدعي تقدير قيمة ما عرضه للقارئ الغربي من صور "مخزية" تاريخيا لِما كان في حقبة "محاكم التفتيش" أثناء الحروب ضد المسلمين حتى سقوط الأندلس، ومن بعد، فلئن كان بعض ذلك يثير للوهلة الأولى الانطباع كما لو أنّه ينقل عن مصادر عربية وإسلامية، فواقع الحال أنّ كثيرا من الفظائع الوحشية التي ارتكبت، والعصبية الدينية الدافعة لارتكابها، مؤرّخٌ تأريخاً دقيقاً في المصادر الغربية، إنّما يتمّ تجاهله فيما يُكتب حديثا، وإن ذُكر فلا يجري ذلك بوضوح مع اتخاذ موقف الإدانة كما هو الحال مع المؤلف في كتابه هذا.
ولئن استفاد القارئ الغربي من الكتاب بالتعرّف على ما بقي مهمل الذكر غالبا، عساه يعمل على تجنّب تكرار الجريمة، فإن استفادة القارئ العربي من ترجمة الكتاب يجب أن تشمل العمل على تجنّب تكرار صناعة الأسباب التي لم تؤدّ فقط إلى "خسارة الأندلس" كما يقال عادة، بل إلى انهيار صرح حضاري كبير، كان في انهياره خسارة مشتركة للأسرة البشرية عموما.
