تغيرت وسائل الإعلام والتواصل الإنساني وتطورت عبر الزمن وشهدت السنوات الثلاثين الأخيرة أسرع تلك التطورات وأعمقها على صعيد الوسائل، لكن جوهر مهنة الإعلام، قواعدها وأصولها ومحدداتها وأخلاقياتها لم تتغير كثيراً.
فالخبر، وهو جوهر مهنة الإعلام وأساسها، لم تتغير شروطه ومقوماته، وكذلك الفنون الصحفية الاخرى من المقال والتحقيق والتقرير والتحليل وغيرها.
مع تطور الحياة والمنجزات الإنسانية، عمدت مؤسسات إعلامية كبرى انتشرت وراكمت الخبرات والنجاحات إلى وضع قواعد وضوابط جديدة تضفي على المهنة هيبةً ووقاراً فصارت من تقاليد العمل المهني المحترف، حيث وحدت المصطلحات ووضعت قواعد ثابتة لأصول المهنة وأخلاقياتها.
إن تبدأ متأخراً باللحاق بركب الحضارة والإستفادة من تجارب الإنسانية خير من المراوحة أو التأجيل أو رفض ما يأتي من الآخر المتقدم.
وكالة الأنباء الأردنية كانت أول مؤسسة إعلامية أردنية، وربما من المؤسسات الإعلامية العربية القليلة التي وضعت موجهاً صحفياً (style book) وكان ذلك عام (2002) بجهد ذاتي تولاه فريق عمل من أبنائها، وقد تطور ذلك الجهد عن موجه جديد عام (2008) وتم تحديثه عام (2010).
يفرق الأكاديميون وكثير من المهنيين المحترفين بين محتوى وسائل الإعلام ووسائل التواصل الإجتماعي، على إعتبار أن على الأولى الإلتزام الكامل بالمعايير والأخلاق المهنية في الكلمة والصوت والصورة ومراعاة التشريعات الأمر الذي لا تلتزم به الثانية.
