يعتبر المعري من اشلعراء الأفذاذ بين أعلام الشعر والأدب، في العصور الأدبية الزاهرة، التي شهدتها لعة الضاد، إذ لم يجتمع لأحد من الذين سبقوه أو جاءوا بعده، مثلما اجتمع له من علم وسعه معرفه وعمق تجربه، فبزهم بعبقريته المتفرده، وقد اشتمل الكتاب على دراسة عصر أبي العلاء والحياة السياسة والاجتماعية، وكذلك الحياة الأدبية منه، ثم قدم الكتاب دراسة عن حياة الشاعر ومولده ونشأته وشيوخه وما يتعلق بحياته الخاصة ومؤلفاته العديدة التي ذكرها المؤرخون، ولكن لم يصل إلينا إلا أقلها، عرف المعري بقوة الذاكرة، حافظاً لأشعار السابقين من شعراء العرب، متأثراً بهم في نظمه ومؤلفاته، لذا فقد إنصب الكتاب على دراسة تأثير دواوين أشعار العرب على المعري في نظم "ديوان لزوم ما لا يلزم" إن دراسة مصادر ثقافة أبي العلاء المعري ومحاولة البحث فيها جديرة بأن تحظى من القارئ العام والمتخصص بالاهتمام والتقدير.
