كتاب يقع في سبعة أبواب متقاربة في المادة التي هي الأقوال البليغة، من الآيات والأحاديث والأمثال والأشعار، مختلفة في المنهج الذي هو منهج الثعالبي في فصول متفرقة من كتبه، عدا الباب الثالث الذي ضم رسالة صغيرة في أمثال التفضيل، أمره بجمعها أحد ملوك عصره. وقد صرح الثعالبي بإهداء الكتاب للشيخ أبي الحسن مسافر بن الحسن، الذي ورد نيسابور سنة 424هـ بصحبة السلطان مسعود. ولعل الثعالبي أراد أن يهدي أبا الحسن كتاباً على جناح السرعة، فلما لم يجد مادة لكتاب جديد لفق هذا الكتاب من فصول كتبه الأخرى، بعد أن أضاف إليها وهذب بعضها.

يتناول تاريخ الأدب في عصر المماليك لذلك يعد من الكتب التي لا غنى عنها للباحثين في الأدب إذ ضمنه كثيراً من نماذج شعراء عصره وقدم تصويراً دقيقاً للحياة الأدبية آنذاك ولعل هذا الكتاب يعد من أبرز ما ألف.الحموي وهو تقي الدين أبي بكر بن علي بن محمد بن حجة القادري الحنفي المعروف بابن حجة الحموي منشئ دواوين الانشاء الشريف بالديار المصرية والممالك الاسلامية (777 - 837 هـ)
