جرجان بلدة تاريخية، من أعمال مازندران في بلاد فارس (إيران)، لها شأن كبير في التاريخ، ولا سيما التاريخ العلمي الإسلامي نبغ منها طوائف من أهل العلم، ففي الحديث أمثال أبي "نعيم عبد الملك بن محمد بن عدي، وفي فقه الشافعية مثل "إبراهيم بن هاني وغيرهم من علماء وفقهاء تلك البلدة. ونظراً لما لهذه البلدة من شهرة واسعة ولما لرجالها من آثار هامة عني المؤلف "السهماني" بتدوين تاريخها في هذا الكتاب الذي يعد من أول وأشهر الكتب التراثية التي دونت في تاريخ جرجان.
واللافت في الكتاب أن الأبواب التي في أوله دونت فيمن دخل جرجان من الصحابة والتابعين، وأسماء ولاتها في الدولتين الأموية والعباسية. وبيان خطط مساجدها. وفي متنه يتحدث المؤلف عن تواريخ الرجال وأصنافهم، وممن ترجم لهم جماعة من الفقهاء الحنفية والشافعية، كما ضمن كتابه هذا عدداً من الأحاديث والآثار والحكايات الغريبة عن بلدة جرجان. وقد جاء هذا الكتاب محققاً عن النسخة الوحيدة المحفوظة في مكتبة "بودلين" بجامعة إكسفورد من مستملكات الأسقف "وليم لاد".
