إنى لما رأيت كثيرا من البلدان تعصب أهلها وأظهروا مفاخرها بدخول الصحابة رضى الله عنهم أجمعين بلادهم، وكون الخلفاء والأمراء وجماعة من العلماء عندهم، حتى أرخوا لذلك تواريخ،وصنفوا فيها تصانيف على مابلغهم، ولم أر أحدا من مشايخنا رحمهم الله صنف فى ذكر علماء أهل جرجان تصنيفا أو أرخ لهم تأريخا على توافر علمائها وتظاهر شيوخها وفضلائها، فأحببت أن اجمع في ذلك مجموعا على قدر جهدي وطاقتي مع قلة بضاعتى، وعرض لى جمعه حين تفانى العلماء الذين يوثق بعلمهم ويعتمد على معرفتهم، ولم أتمكن من كتبهم فأستمد منها إذ كان أهلها قد أضاعوها لقلة رغباتهم وفتور نياتهم، فاقتصرت على ما حضر وأخذت بما تيسر وقدمت العذر حتى إن قصرت فيه تقصيرا أو شذ عنى شئ كنت فى ذلك معذورا، وبالله استعنت وعليه توكلت وهو نعم المولى ونعم النصير.
