صنّف الإمام النّووي كتابه "تهذيب الأسماء واللغات" لِخدمة ستّة من أبرز كتب الشافعية، قام فيه بالتعريف والترجمة للأعلام، وشرح الألفاظ والمصطلحات الفقهية والمباحث اللغوية، والتعريف بالأماكن، فافتتحه بالسيرة النبويّة الشّريفة، تشريفاً للكتاب بسيرته، وتعطيراً له بذِكره.
فقدّم هذا الفقيه الزاهد والعَلَم الثبت ترجمة لرسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم انتخب فيها ما يعتبر بحق مدخلاً لدراسة السيرة النبويّة، بحيث تكون لطالب العلم ملخّصاً مشتملاً على أطراف هذا الفن وكفاية لكلّ مُسلمٍ يرغب بالإتعاظ منها والإهتداء بأنوارها.
وتمتاز هذه السيرة بأنها قد خطّت بيراع أبرز علماء الحديث والسيرة، ما يجعلها مرجعاً لكل قارئ، خاصّة أنه قد اختصرها فاشتملت على لبّ شمائله وسيرته مما لا يليق بالمسلم جهله، مع رصانة في الصياغة والأسلوب.
وقد أتبعها المصنّف بقسم عرض فيه وأبدع وفق مذهب السادة الشافعية.
