هذا أحد كتب "كشاجم" التى وصلت إلينا ضمن ما وصل من تراثنا الذي عدت عليه أحداث وأحداث وهو كتاب صغير الحجم حقا الا أنه عظيم الفائدة. إن كتاب أدب النديم يمكن أن نطلق عليه أدب السلوك العام، وهو قد تخصص في هذا الناحية، وبين للإنسان ما يجب عليه في سلوكه عند المنادمة، ولقاء الاصحاب والكبراء، ومجالستهم والتحدث معهم وما قد يتطلبه الجلوس من مشاركة في الطعام والشراب والمناقشة، كما وضح للإنسان أيضاً ما يجب ان يبتعد عنه عند هذه المواقف.
حقا إن الحديث عن السلوك العام ليس جديدا فإن الكتب القديمة ذكرت نتفاً متفرقة في صفحات كثيرة منها انما الجديد في هذا الكتاب- رغم صغر حجمه- أنه أتى لنا بهذه الآداب بين دفتيه، وتحت عنوانات محددة بحيث يصبح القارئ ملماً بموضوع الكتاب كله أو ملماً بآداب السلوك كلها عن طريقه دفعة واحدة بخلاف الكتب القديمة السابقة التى جعلت هذه الآداب متناثرة هنا وهناك مما يتسبب في عدم إلمام القارئ بها كلها او بعضها او على الاقل قد تشتت ذهنه في سبيل الحصول عليها او على بعضها. وقد اعترف كشاجم بأن العلماء الأولين كان لهم فضل الريادة في هذا الموضوع من حيث إنهم أتوا ببعض هذه الآداب في كتبهم ولكنه هو يكون له فضل السبق والتفوق في ضم هذه الآداب في كتاب واحد.
