إن ما أخذه الحكم العربي من الحضارات المجاورة فيما يخص آداب السلوك لم يكن لضرورة اجتماعية أو شعبية بل لضرورات تدعيم سلطة الحكم وزيادة هيبته. وتذكر المرويات في الأدب عن آداب مجالسة أولي الأمر والسادة ومنها كتاب أدب النديم لكشاجم وهو "محمود بن الحسين أو محمود بن محمد بن الحسين بن السندي بن شاهك وكنيته أبو الفتح الرملي ولقبه كشاجم وهو من أهل الرملة في فلسطين ومن أصول فارسية" تنقل بين دمشق وحلب والقدس وبغداد وحمص واستقر أخيراً في حلب، فكان من شعراء عبد الله –والد سيف الدولة بن حمدان- ثم ابنه سيف الدولة أمير حلب له مصنفات كثر ومنها الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا والذي يضم تعاليم في أصول وقواعد مجالسة أولي الأمر والسادة السراة وفيها يلتفت كشاجم إلى ادق الأمور وأصفرها فيبنه عليها ويحذر من مغبة ارتكابها.
يعتبر كتاب أدب النديم كتاب في "الإتكيت" بلغة اليوم ولكن الإتكيت أو حسن التصرف واللباقة والكياسة في هذا الكتاب لا يراد منه تعليم العامة أو السواد الأعظم من الخلق في كيفية التعامل.. بل تعليم الوافد على الخليفة او الأمير أو الرجل الخطير الذي يغضب ويرضى لأقل سبب ويحكمه مزاج متقلب وهوى لا يستقر على حال.
وجعل كشاجم "كتاب أدب النديم" في ثلاثة عشرة باباً: أولها باب مدح النديم وذكر فضائله وذم التفرد بشرب النبيذ يلي ذلك: باب أخلاق النديم وصفاته، باب التداعي للمنادمة، باب الشرب كثرتهم وقلتهم، باب السماع، باب المحادثة، باب غسل اليد، باب ارادة الكأس، باب الإكثار والإقلال، باب طلب الحاجة والإستماحة على النبيذ، باب هيئة النديم وما يلزمه لرئيسه، باب ما يلزم الرئيس لنديمه، باب الأدب في الشطرنج.
