تتنافس الشركات الأمريكية للحصول على جائزة بالدريدج سنويًا. وتمنح هذه الجائزة لعدد 6 شركات فقط: عدد 2 شركة كبيرة صناعية+ عدد 2 شركة صغيرة [أقل من 500 عامل]+ عدد 2 شركة خدمات. ولكن إذا نظرنا إلى المعايير السبعة نجد أنها كلها تقع في نطاق وظائف الإدارة سواء كانت في أمريكا أو في آسيا أو في أفريقيا، فكل المنظمات في كل مكان على وجه الأرض يوجد بها: قيادة، تخطيط استراتيجي، عميل وسوق، بيانات ومعلومات تحلل، موارد بشرية تدار وتنمي، عمليات وأنشطة تؤدي، وأخيرًا نتائج العمل تقاس وتحسب. معنى ذلك أن هذه المعايير تحقق التفوق والذكاء لأي منظمة في أي مكان تلتزم بالمنهج والأساليب التي تتطلبها، والتفسير الوحيد لذلك أن الشركات والمنظمات الأمريكية منها وغير الأمريكية تلجأ إلى معايير بالدريدج كأدوات تحسين مستمر لأدائها وصولًا إلى المستويات العالمية. تخضع المعايير لتعديلات على فترات من الجهات المشرفة على تطبيقها.
ويقع متن الكتاب في تمهيد وسبعة فصول. يخصص كل فصل لأحد المعايير السبعة. ينقسم كل معيار إلى مجموعة فئات فرعية طبقًا لتعديل 1994، أو مجموعة من البنود طبقًا لتعديل 1990 ثم يتم معالجة المعيار بطريقتين: الطريقة الأولى تحت عنوان: أولًا: أسئلة التقييم طبقًا لتعديل 1994، تتناول الفئات الفرعية وتهدف إلى مشاركة كل أعضاء المنظمة على كل المستويات في الإجابة عن هذه الأسئلة. المنظمة التي تحصل على 100% هي المنظمة الذكية على المستوى العالمي. والمنظمة التي تحصل على 0% هي الغبية والبعيدة عن منهج الجودة. ويوجد بالقطع مستويات بين هذين النمطين، الطريقة الثانية تأتي تحت عنوان: ثانيًا: دراسة الحالة طبقًا لتعديل 1990. والحالة هنا هي الشركة الخيالية "ألفاتلكو"، بحيث تضع القارئ أسلوب تطبيق البند. ويتعرف من خلال ذلك على نواحي القوة، ومجالات التحسين، ومجموعة من الإرشادات يستعين بها عند زيارته الميدانية لتقييم ذكاء منظمة ما أو وحدة تنظيمية معينة.
