المشيخة كتاب يجمع فيه العالم تراجم شيوخه الذين أخذ عنهم. وقد بدأ أهل العلم يؤلفون مشيخاتهم إثر البدء بتوثيق الحديث الشريف وتدوينه، من خلال توثيق رواته، حينما حرصوا على توثيق علومهم، فأخذوا يذكرون شيوخهم ويعرفون بفضلهم وينوهون بصلتهم بهم، ويعددون الكتب التي قرؤوها عليهم والعلوم التي أخذوها عنهم.
ومن أهم المشيخات المعروفة عند العلماء مشيخات السمعاني وهي ثلاث: الأولى خرجها لابنه عبد الرحيم في ثمانية عشر جزءاً، والثانية صنعها لنفسه وفيها ترجمات مشايخه مطولة وألحق بهذه المشيخة الثانية ذيلاً بترجمات شيخاته. وأما الثالثة فهي المعروفة باسم (التحبير في المعجم الكبير) أورد فيها (1193) ترجمة رتبها على حروف المعجم.
