كان رجلاً كسائر رجال قريش، ولو لم يسلم ويتبع النبي الأمي صلى الله عليه وسلم لكان شأنه كشأن جاهلي قتل أو مات على جاهليته، لكن عناية الله تعالى استدركته بدعوة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: "اللهم أعز هذا الدين بعمر بن الخطاب". فأسلم، فسبق سابقيه بما ميز الله شخصيته ونفسيته من المؤهلات التي كانت نفحات إلهية سمت به جعلته الخليفة الثاني لنبينا المصطفى (صلى الله عليه وسلم)، وكانت تتمثل تلك النفحات الإلهية بعمق فهمه لكتاب الله تعالى، وسعة إدراكه لتوجيهات النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وحتى غدا بحق وجدارة أعظم خليفة للمسلمين بعد سيدنا أبي بكر الصديق (رضي الله عنه).
