يقول المؤلف عن كتابه هذا: "بما أن افتعال الخصومة بين الإسلام والعروبة ناشط في هذه الأيام، بسبب من الجهل والتعصب عند بعضهم. ولدوافع مغرضة عند بعضهم الآخر، فقد استهدف هذا الكتاب توضيح هذه المسألة، وتقديم الدلائل من خلال الآيات والأحاديث ومواقف المسلمين الأوائل، على أن الترابط قوي ومتين بينهما وأن الإسلام هو الامتداد الطبيعي المتطور للعروبة وكان لها ثورة وثروة...
ويتابع المؤلف: استهدف توضيح الآفاق الإنسانية والعالمية للإسلام وكيف أنها لا تتناقض مع عروبته إذا ما فهم على حقيقته، كما عالج بعض التساؤلات المشروعة حول الأسس المطلوبة لفهم الإسلام وهل يتناقض مع العلم ويصلح لكل زمان ومكان، مع الإشارة إلى عوامل التردي والسبيل إلى التقدم والفهم الحي للتراث والمعاصرة ودورهما في عملية التحرر والبناء والتطوير. وبما أن موضوعات هذا الكتاب تنطوي على أهمية بالغة ولا تزال تثير الاهتمام والنقاش بين رجال الفكر والسياسة، فإننا نعتقد بأن القارئ سيجد فيه الكثير مما يبحث عنه ويريد الإطلاع عليه".
ومهما يكن من أمر، فعلى الرغم من مرور ما يقارب الثلاثون عاماً على صدور الكتاب في طبعته الأولى، إلّا أن موضوعاته ما تزال حيّة وأساسية في النظرة إلى العلاقة بين العروبة والإسلام، فهل المخرج في العودة إلى الوراء؟ أم المخرج في مواصلة ما شرعت به المجتمعات العربية في مسيرتها الحديثة إلى النهوض والتقدم؟ ذلك هو الرهان، لقد أراد شبلي العيسمي بكتابه هذا فتح أبواب جديدة للمقاربة والمعالجة، من دون تجاوز جوهر الإسلام الحقيقي، ولذا فالتحدي الآن في الانتقاء من عناصر العروبة والإسلام ما يخدم الحاضر، ويسقط منها ما لا يخدمه، وهذه مسؤولية الجميع.
