"المغني اللبيب" كتاب نال شهرة كبيرة لدى القدماء والمحدثين فقد أراد مؤلفه أن يجمع فيه أحكام الإعراب، مجملة ومفصلة، تكلم على الحروف والمفردات والجمل وحذف ما تكرر وأشار إلى نكت إعراب القرآن، وأورد فيه ما لا يتعلق بالإعراب. وقد تناولته أقلام العلماء في شتى العصور والأمصار بالشرح والتعليق وقد أراد المحقق أن يستدرك ما فات غيره من الباحثين المحققين وقد وازن ابن هشام بين آراء البصريين والكوفيين والبغداديين, وسواهم من النحاة، واختار لنفسه ما يتمشى مع مقاييس مظهراً قدرة فائقة في التوجيه والتعليل والتخريج. وهو يسوق الفكرة ثم يسوق الأدلة والشواهد من القرآن الكريم، والحديث الشريف، والشعر القديم.
وقد توفرت لهذا الكتاب عدة نسخ اختار المحقق منها النسخة الأم، فقابل النسخة المطبوعة بها، وهي نسخة خالية من العيوب، وقد كتبت بعد وفاة المؤلف بثلاث سنوات فقط. وتمشياً مع المنهجية العلمية، فضبط علامات الترقيم، وأثبتها في المواضيع المناسبة بين الكلمات والجمل والعبارات. ووضع عناوين فرعية لكثير من مباحث الكتاب، وأثبت اسم البحر الشعري فوق الشاهد إلى جهة اليسار بين مركبين. كما أكمل الأبيات التي ذكرت غير تامة في المتن، وعمد إلى تخريج الآيات القرآنية تخريجاً كاملاً يشمل أرقام السورة فأسمها فرقم الآية وخرج الأحاديث الشريفة الواردة في المتن وأشار إلى الشواهد الشعرية وترجم لأصحابها ترجمة موجزة تفي بالغرض.
