في هذا الكتاب، يأخذنا المؤرخ إيلان بابيه إلى جذور هذا التناقض، ويعرض، بشكل عميق ساخر، تناقضات فكرة إسرائيل مع التاريخ والواقع، ويحدثنا عن مسيرة هذه الفكرة منذ أن كانت مجرد مشروع حتى أصبحت فكرة تدافع اليوم عن وجودها ممثلة بالدولة والكيان بدءاً من سعيها لتغيير التاريخ بالقوة، واختراع أدب وثقافة ملصقة بأرض ليست أرضها الطبيعية، حتى الوصول لتحويلها إلى سلعة أو مشروع إعلامي يتم تسويقه في العالم لإقناع نفسه أولاً، قبل العالم، بأنه مشروع طبيعي، وأن إسرائيل فكرة إنسانية طبيعية، وهذا السعي لا يخلو من المتناقضات التي تبدو أحياناً طريفة حتى في أسلوب تطبيقها والتفكير فيها.
