اشتهرت الجزائر، بوفرة المدارس والعلماء، وانتشرت المدارس الكبرى ومراكز التعليم، فكانت ذا أهمية ملحوظة، وجذبت كثيراً من الطلاب إلى أنواع من الدراسة.
وهي دراسات شرعية، لكن الأنواع الاخرى من الدراسات النحوية واللغوية والأدبية والرياضية أيضاً عرفت إزدهاراً وإقبالاً في هذه المدارس وفي غيرها...
وهكذا أصبحت تلمسان، والجزائر، وقسنطينة، بفضل مدارسها الكبرى مركزاً ثقافياً هاماً، تخرج فيها علماء أجلاء في سائر العلوم والفنون، فالفضل في ذلك للعلماء والقائمين عليها معاً وللسكان، فهؤلاء لم يألوا جهداً في تطوير المناهج وطريقة التعليم.
نشأت مدرسة ترشيح المعلمين في الجزائر، وكان إنشاؤها تلبية لحاجة المدارس إلى المعلمين الأكفاء، فقد كثرت المدارس، وإزداد عدد التلاميذ الفرنسيون تبعاً لإزدياد عدد المواطنين والمستوطنين، ومن دواعي ظهورها أيضاً تثبت المدرسة الموجهة للجزائريين، والتي بالمدرسة العربية / الفرنسية، والمقصود أن يكون على المعلم المتخرج منها، سواء أكان أوروبياً او جزائرياً، عارفاً باللغة العربية، وافتتحت مدرسة ترشيح المعلمين ببوزريعة، وللدخول للمدرسة لا بد من المشاركة في مسابقة تجري في الولايات الثلاث (الجزائر، تلمسان، الجزائر).
أنشأت فرنسا المدارس (الفرانكو / إسلامية)، في الجزائر العاصمة، وفي تلمسان، وفي قسنطينة، ولم تكن هناك مدارس للتعليم الثانوي والعالي إلا بحلول القرن العشرين، حيث فتحت (المدرسة الثعالبية)، في عهد الحاكم الفرنسي (شارل جونار)، كان له أثر كبير في الحياة الفكرية في تلك الفترة.
يذكر أن (جونار) شجع إحياء فن العمارة الإسلامية، وبعث التراث المكتوب، والتقرب من طبقة المثقفين التقليديين، وتشجيعهم على القيام بمهمتهم القديمة، كإقامة الدروس في المساجد ونحوها، كما اهتم بالتأليف ونشر الكتب العلمية وكتب التراث.
