تنحصر مادة هذا الكتاب وهو الثالث من "سلسلة المكتبة الخيامية العربية" في موضوع الأوهام التي وردت حول عمر الخيام في كتابات العرب، ولما كانت مادة هذه الأوهام بعضها مشترك بين الكتاب وبعضها الآخر فردي فقد اهتم المؤلف "يوسف بكار" في كتابه هذا بتقسيم متنه إلى قسمين رئيسيين: أحدهما، أسماه "الأوهام المشتركة في مسألة الواحدة من مسائلها غير باحث أو دارس أو مترجم أو كاتب. والآخر الأوهام الفردية التي انفرد بها أشخاص وحدهم، وهي تتفاوت كثرة وقلة، وقوة وضعفاً من باحث لآخر، ومن بين المشكلات التي تحدث عنها المؤلف في كتابه هذا نذكر: في تاريخ ميلاد الخيام ووفاته، في شعر الخيام العربي، في عدد رباعيات ترجمة فيتزجيرالد، في أول مترجم عربي للرباعيات، في ديوان الدوبيت... الخ.
