تبرز أهمية هذا البحث الذى نحن بصدده، وهو "ميخائيل نعيمة منهجه فى النقد واتجاهه فى الأدب" من حيث إنه -فيما قدر له- يحاول أن يعطى صورة متكاملة مستوية لعلم من أعلام الأدب العربى الحديث، أسهم بقلمه فى مجال النقد الأدبى فى مطالع هذا القرن، وقاد حركة التجديد والبعث الأدبى فى المهجر فى الوقت الذى قادها فيه العقاد والمازنى فى مصر، كما أسهم بقلمه فى مجال الخلق والإبداع، فكتب الشعر، والرواية، والقصة القصيرة، والمسرحية، والمقالة والسيرة الأدبية وكان فى كل ما كتب سواء فى النقد أم الأدب يصدر عن قيم فنية وفكرية وروحية آمن بها، وامتزجت بروحه وكيانه.
وقد اعتمدت أساساً فى هذا البحث على مواجهة النصوص الأصلية التى نشرها نعيمة فى كتب أو فى مقالات وأحاديث صحفية، ومعايشتها أطول فترة ممكنة، وبذل غاية الجهد معها فى البحث والدراسة والاستنباط، حتى إذا استنفدت طاقتى، عدت فنظرت فيما قد يكون بين يدى من أقوال الدارسين قبلى فى هذا الموضع أو ذاك، وهذه النقطة أو تلك، مؤمناً بتباين قدرات البحث ووسائله بين الباحثين مما يؤدى إلى اختلافهم فى تقدير الأشياء وتقويم الأمور، وبأن الهدف الأسمى من وراء البحث هو إدراك الحقيقة أينما كانت وكيفما وجدت، ومؤمناً أيضاً بأن اختلاف وجهات النظر فى قضايا الفن والأدب ينفع ولا يضر، ويضئ جوانب الموضوع ويكشف أبعاده وأعماقه.
