آثرت في هذا الكتاب أن أصل ما انقطع، وأن أعود إلى البحث البلاغي في منابعه الأولى لأعالج موضوعات علم البيان، فإن عرجت على كتابات المتأخرين فإنني أستصفى منها ما أراه يمثل جوهر الموضوع ولبابه، وأغضي عما أحسبه لا ينمي حسًا أدبيًا أو يضيف جديدًا، وكان من نتيجة ذلك أنني تخففت من تقسيماتهم الكثيرة وتفريعاتهم المتنوعة التي ينسى آخرها أولها، ويشعر القارئ الذي يحاول استيعابها بفراغ جعبته في النهاية، مهما أجهد نفسه وأتعب ذاكرته.
على أن ذلك لا يعني أنني وقفت عند مجرد تحرير المفاهيم البلاغية القديمة، فقد كان تمحيص هذه المفاهيم ومناقشتها بما تتمخض عنه المناقشة من قبول أو رفض خطًا أساسيًا في المنهج الذي اتبعته.
ولما كان المجاز قضية لغوية بالدرجة الأولى فقد أفدت في دراسته من الدراسات اللغوية الحديثة، كما أفدت منها في بعض المواطن الأخرى.
وإيمانًا بعودة الارتباط بين البحث البلاغي والنقد الأدبي جعلت المبحث الثالث من هذا الكتاب لدراسة الصورة وعلاقتها بأساليب البيان. وهي علاقة جد وثيقة، على نحو ما سيرى القارئ فيما بعد.
وإني لأرجو أن أكون قد قدمت شيئًا من هذا الكتاب ينال رضا القارئ أو يدفعه إلى الاعتراض والمناقشة، ففي كلا الأمرين خير للكتاب وصاحبه.
