الطبراني، أبو القاسم (260 - 360هـ، 873 - 971م).
سليمان بن أحمد بن أيوب بن مطير اللخمي الشامي، أبو القاسم. محدِّث مشهور، ثقة حافظ، معمر. والطبراني نسبة إلى بلدة طبرية، فإن أصله منها. وُلد بعكا في فلسطين، وبدأ بسماع الحديث سنة 273هـ. كان أبوه حريصًا عليه فرحل به لطلب العلم. رحل إلى بلدان كثيرة منها: بغداد والكوفة، والبصرة وإلى مدائن الشام والحجاز ومصر واليمن وأصبهان وغيرها. وامتدت رحلاته ثلاثين سنة. استقر به المقام في أصفهان. سمع من إسحق الدبري وعلي بن عبد العزيز البغوي، وأبي عبد الرحمن النسائي. روى عنه ابن عقدة، وأبو بكر بن مردويه، وأبو نعيم الأصبهاني، وعبد الرحمن بن أحمد الصفار. من مصنفاته المعجم الكبير؛ المعجم الأوسط؛ المعجم الصغير؛ كتاب الدعاء والمناسك؛ عُشرة النساء؛ السنة؛ مسند شعبة؛ مسند سفيان؛ الأوائل؛ مسند الشاميين؛ مكارم الأخلاق وله تفسير كبير الحجم. سرد الذهبي مصنفات الطبراني نقلاً عن يحيى بن منده، فكانت 76 مؤلفًا. عاش مائة سنة وعشرة أشهر. وتُوفي في أصفهان.

هذا الكتاب "مقتل الحسين بن علي بن أبي طالب" هو من أجل كتب الحديث، وقد ألفه عالم من أكابر علماء السنة النبوية المطهرة وهو الإمام الطبراني المشهود له بالعلم والعمل. والطبراني في هذا الكتاب الفريد "مقتل الحسين" يورد من آثار السنة وكنوزها ما خفي عن العلماء، ناهيك عن العامة. ومعظم رواة الأحاديث في هذا الكتاب هم من الثقات كما سيتضح للقارئ وعن مراجعته الهوامش التي نقلها المحقق عن مشاهير علماء السنة.
وقد ألحق الكتاب بفهارس منوعة كفهرس رواة وشيوخ المؤلف، وفهرس الآيات القرآنية، وفهرس الموضوعات المفصل، وهو فريد من نوعه، وفهرس الأعلام والجماعات والقبائل، وهو بمثابة تراجم لأعلام الكتاب رجع فيها المحقق إلى الكثير من كتب التراجم.
