أدق وصف وصل إلينا عن المقاهي المصرية هو ما كتبه المستشرق الإنجليزي ادوارد وليم لين في كتابه (المصريون المحدثون)، يقول لين الذي زارالقاهرة وعاش بها في مطلع القرن التاسع عشر أن القاهرة بها أكثر من ألف مقهى، والمقهى غرفة صغيرة ذات واجهة خشبية على شكل عقود ويتردد على المقاهي أفراد الطبقة السفلى والتجار وتزدحم بهم عصرًا ومساءً وخاصة في الأعياد الدينية، وليس في هذه المباني أثاثات على الإطلاق وليس ثمة مرايا أو ديكورات داخلية أو خارجية، فقط ثمة منصات (دكة) خشبية تشكل نوع من المقاعد الدائرية بطول جدرانة المبنى وتجد هذا في يومنا هذا في مقاهي القرى والتجمع بمصر، وكانت المقاهي دائمًا أماكن مخصصة لرواية قصص السيرة الشعبية والملاحم، وكان أصحاب المقاهي يجلبون رواة القصص، وبعضهم يعرف باسم (الهلالية) لتخصصه في سيرة أبو زيد الهلالي، والبعض الآ×ر يعرف باسم (الظاهرية) نسبة إلى الظاهر بيبرس، وقصص أخرى منها سيرة الأميرة ذات الهمة والدرة الملكة في فتح مكة، وغزوة الإمام علي مع اللعين الهضام ابن الحجاف وفتوح اليمن المعروفة برأس الغول.
