يعد علماء العرب والمسلمين بصورة عامة من أكثر المفكرين عرفاناً بالفضل والجميل. فقد أطلق القدماء منهم مثلاً على العالم اليوناني أرسطو اسم المعلم الأول، وأطلقوا على الطبيب اليوناني جالينوس لقب الفاضل أو الملهم. كما اعتادوا أيضاً ذكر أسماء المراجع التي اقتبسوا منها أسماء العلماء الذين أخذوا عنهم العلم، والرواة الذين سمعوا منهم.
لقد قام التراجمة العرب والمستعربين بنقل ذخائر العلم، والتي كانت محفوظة في خزائن من جاورهم من الأمم المتحضرة، ذاكرين أسماء أصحاب تلك المؤلفات التي قاموا بترجمتها، دون انتحال أو تشويه. وكان عملهم هذا مخلداً لذكرى أولئك العلماء، من يونان وروم وسريان وفرس، لأن مؤلفاتهم الأصلية قد فقدت منذ أمد بعيد.
لم ينظر العلماء العرب والمسلمون نظرة عرقية للعلم، بل طلبوه حيث وجدوه، كما أنهم كانوا سمحاء في عطائهم فلم يحتكروه أو يستغلوه. وأنفقوا على مواليهم الذين توسموا فيهم الذكاء ومحبة العلم، فأصبحوا من أشهر علماء المسلمين.
ومن الأعمال التي خلد فيها العرب والمسلمون أصحاب الكفاآت من جميع الأمم تصنيفهم مؤلفات تضم سيرة حياتهم، مع ما وضعوه من مؤلفات وما أبدعوه من مكتشفات ودراسات. وهي صفة إنسانية عالمية لم تظهر عند من سبقهم من الأمم.
وبين أيدينا اليوم معجم حديث، قان بتصنيفه أديب ومربي الأستاذ محمد زهير حميدان، الذي عمل كمدرس وموجه اختصاصي سابق، لمادة التاريخ. وخدم هذا العلم في ثانويات اللاذقية ودمشق ودور المعلمين مدة لا تقل عن خمس وعشرين عاماً.
وفي هذا المعجم صفات مميزة غير موجودة في غيره، منها أنها يضم السيرة العلمية لنخبة من العلماء العرب والمسلمين، ممن وضعوا مؤلفات مرموقة في العلوم الأساسية والتطبيقية، كعلم الطب والرياضيات والفلك والفيزياء والكيمياء والصيدلة والنبات، منذ القرن الأول للهجرة حتى الوقت الحاضر، مع ذكر إنتاجهم الفكري والإبداع العلمي. كما صنف أسماء هؤلاء العلماء حسب القرن الذي ظهروا فيه، وبهذه الصورة يصبح من السهل على الباحث معرفة التطور الذي حدث في كل علم من خلال دراسته لمجموعة الأبحاث التي تمت خلال فترة زمنية معينة. وبما أن هؤلاء العلماء قد جرى الاحتفال بهم في أنحاء مختلفة من العالمين العربي والإسلامي لذلك قان الأستاذ حميدان بإيجاز بعض ما ألقي من الأبحاث في تلك المناسبات.
