الأغاني كتاب موسيقى وغناء وطرب. فقد ترجم مؤلفه لأكثر المغنين المشهورين في صدر الإسلام والدولتين: الأموية والعباسية، أمثال ابن مسجح وابن محرز وابن سريج والغريض والأبجر وغيرهم...وترجم لأكثر المغنين من الخلفاء أمثال الواثق والمنتصر والمعتزوالمعتمد وغيرهم...وجمع الأغاني العربية قديمها وحديثها وانفرد بذكر الغناء العربي وقواعده وآلات الطرب والموسيقى التي كانت مستعملة وشائعة في أزهى العصور الإسلامية مثل الأرغن الرومي، والدفّ، والطبل والطنبور والعود والناي والبربط والرباب. وبنى أبو الفرج كتابه على مئة صوت كان هارون الرشيد أمر ابراهيم الموصلي أن يختارها له. وزاد عليها بعض أصوات أخرى. فكان يذكر لصوت وتوقيعه، ويذكر قائله ويترجم له، ويستطرد من ذلك إلى غيره من الشعراء والأدباء والمغنين والمغنيات. وهو في كل ذلك يتقلب بين جدّ وهزل وآثار وأخبار وسيّر وأشعار متصلة بتاريخ العرب وملوكهم، حتى كان كتابه على حدّ قول ابن خلدون ديوان العرب.
