هذا الكتاب، الذي يُعَدُّ واحدا من كلاسيكيات الأدب السياسيّ، لوحة نابضة بالحياة للمجتمع الفرنسيّ، في فترة النظام القديم أى السابق لثورة 1789 الفرنسية العظمى، فيما كان يتحوَّل بعمق من نظام اجتماعيّ إلى نظام اجتماعيّ آخر، وهو يحدد بوضوح طابع هذا التحوُّل ومنطقه وديناميته ومغزاه.
هنا يُبرهِن توكفيل أن ذلك " النظام القديم" (فترة الحكم الملكيّ المطلق بوجه عام) يمثل الثورة البرجوازية الأولى (الاجتماعية) التي كانت ستندفع تاريخيًّا في طريق المستقبل الرأسمالي حتى بدون ثورة 1879، على أنه يبحث الشروط الاجتماعية- الاقتصادية لفرنسا، وكذلك شروطها الفكرية والفلسفية والأدبية وأحلامها بالمساواة والحرية، تلك الشروط التي جعلت تلك الثورة السياسية تعصف بفرنسا والعالم والتاريخ، بدورها التقدُّميّ المتمثل في رفع فرنسا وأوروبا إلى الحضارة الرأسمالية ولكن حطمت أحلام المساواة والحرية، وقادت فرنسا على طريق الإمبراطورية والاستبداد والاستعباد.
