في هذا الكتاب نحاول تقديم نبذة عن تطور الإتصال ووسائل الإعلام بالإشارة إلى أهم النماذج والنظريات الّتي ساهمت في شرح وتفسير كل من العملية الإتصالية والعملية الإعلامية، نحاول في هذا العرض تقديم معلومات للدارسين في مجال الإعلام والإتصال بطريقة مبسطة.
يعد الإتصال عملية طبيعية تحدث بين أغلب الكائنات الحيّة على أي مستوى من المستويات المختلفة المعروفة للإتصال سواء كان هذا الإتصال بالأصوات أو الإيماءات المعبرة عن الحالة النفسية أو المزاجية، أو بالتعبيرات الجسمانية أو بأي إتصال حسي آخر.
إنّ الإتصال لا يضمن الحياة في جوهرها فحسب، ولكنّه يعني كذلك دفع النشاط الإجتماعي والتعبير عن الحضارة، كما أنّ الإتصال يحقّق تكامل المعرفة والتنظيم والقوّة ويمتد كخيط يصل ذاكرة الإنسان الأولى وأنبل تطلعاته عبر جهاد مستمر من أجل حياة أفضل.
ويعدّ الإتصال بين الأفراد والجماعات عاملاً أساسياً في تأدية العمليات الإجتماعية لوظيفتها على الوجه الأكمل، إنّ درجة فهم أفراد المجتمع لبعضهم البعض لها أهمية كبيرة في نمو المجتمع ورقيه.
وفهم الإتصال هو شرح للتطورات التاريخية التي أدت إلى نشأة هذه المجموعة من الممارسات الإجتماعية، الثقافية، السياسية، لتقنيات الأيديولوجيا التي تشكل ما نطلق عليه اليوم الإتصال.
