نمت حضارة مصر القديمة وأزدهرت بفضل ظروفها الجغرافية الفريدة, فمصر تنقسم إلي جزأين: الجزء الجنوبي, ويعرف بالصعيد أو الوجه القبلي, وهو يتكون من شريط ضيق طويل من الأرض الخصبة علي كل من ضفتي النيل, الذي ينساب من الجنوب إلي الشمال, أما بقية الأرض الموجودة في الصعيد, فهي صحراوية, وتوجد فيها جبال صخرية في الشرق, بين نهر النيل والبحر الأحمر, إلا أننا في الغرب, لا نجد شيئاً سوي مساحات شاسعة من رمال الصحراء بخلاف بضعة واحات قليلة.
وأما الجزء الشمالي من القطر, والمعروف بمصر السفلي, أو الوجه البحري, فهو عبارة عن أرض مستوية يتشعب فيها النهر إلي فرعين صغيرين علي شكل حرف v عريض, ويطلق علي هذه المنطقة دلتا النيل.
