نشأت الحضارة المصرية القديمة ونمت بفضل الظروف الطبيعية الفريدة للبلد, وتنقسم مصر إلي جزأين الجزء الجنوبي, المعروف بالصعيد أو الوجه القبلي, ويتكون من شريط طويل ضيق من الأراضي الخصبة علي ضفتي نهر النيل, الذي ينساب من الجنوب إلي الشمال.
أما بقية أرض الصعيد فتتكون من صحاري, فتوجد جبال صخرية في الشرق, بين النيل والبحر الأحمر, وصحراء في الغرب, بها عدد قليل من الواحات.
والجزء الشمالي من البلد, المعروف بالوجه البحري أو مصر السفلي, وهو عبارة عن أرض مستوية يتفرع فيها النيل إلي فرعين صغيرين يكونان شكل الحرف v ويطلق علي هذه المنطقة دلتا النيل.
