الوقاية النفسية بوصفها جزءاً لا ينفصم عن الثقافة العامة هي من أهم أهداف هذا الكتاب ولذلك فإنه كُتب بلغة غير اختصاصية وبأسلوب دارج ومألوف، يعتمد على التعريف ومحاولة تحديد المعاني، والتعريف، كما يقولون، نصف المعرفة.
وبشكل عام يتألف هذا الكتاب من خمسة أبواب أساسية: الباب الأول: يبدأ الحديث عن مفاهيم أساسية عامة تخص النفس ثم ينتقل إلى كيفية تفاعلها مع بيئتها ثم عن العوامل المؤثرة في تكوين، نمو، النفس ونضجها، تلي ذلك محاولة لتصنيف النفس ومعرفة ما هو طبيعي وما هو غير طبيعي. الباب الثاني: تشريح وفسلجة عضو النفس وتوابعه. وظيفة هذا الباب هي الدخول في تفاصيل المفردات النفسية.
الباب الثالث: يتحدث عن تفاصيل المفردات النفسية مع التركيز على الانفعالات لأنها تخص القسم الأكبر من نشاطها النفسي ولأن سوء فهم وظائفها الطبيعية يؤدي إلى اضطرابات نفسية. الباب الرابع: بعد استكمال المعلومات الجزئية عن النفس كافة يبدأ الحديث عن النفس كظاهرة كلية شاملة، هو حديث عن كل ما يهم الذات كوحدة الذات، الوعي بالذات، تقويمها، تحقيقها، الخبرة الذاتية والتأمل النفسي ثم الصحة الوقائية والوقاية النفسية.
الباب الخامس: يتكلم عن كل ما يتعلق بالنفس غير الطبيعية ابتداء من الاضطرابات النفسية مع الاهتمام بما يُسمى الوسائل الدفاعية النفسية، وكذلك موضوع الإحباط والصراع النفسي، يليه الحديث عن الأمراض النفسية وتم التركيز على أهمها وهو القلق المرضي لأنه الأكثر شيوعاً. وينتهي الباب الأخير بنبذة مختصرة جداً عن الأمراض العقلية من وجهة نظر الثقافة العامة كأنموذج حي لما يمكن أن يسببه إهمال الصحة النفسية وتجاهلها.
