"يحكى أن سوء تفاهم وقع بين أبو صافي وأم صافي، فراود الرجل طرف عتب على زوجته، ولحقها أثر كدر من طرف زوجها، وما لبث أن تعوكر مزاج المرأة، فاندقر خاطرا الرجل، وابتعد الواحد منهما عن الآخر، فلم يحدث بينهما أى كلام حتى المساء، وباتا عللى زعل فلحم الجرح على زعل، وأصبح الصباح وكل فريق على سلاحه. وانتشر الخبر في القرية، فحضر بعض المصلحين وحاولوا عبثاً إصلاح ذات البين. وفي المساء حضر خوري الرعية وحاول فرض سلطته وهيبته على الرجل وزوجته. فقال أبو صافي إن خاطره لن يصفو، بعد الآن على زوجته ولذلك أقسم يميناً معظّمة أن لا يتكلم معها مطلقاً بعد الذي حدث. واحتدت المرأة وقالت إنه إذا كان لا بد من "قيام كلام"، فليس بينها وبين زوجها أي كلام، إلى الأبد، وخرج الخوري غاضباً وترك باب البيت مفتوحاً وراءه فأحجم كل من الرجل وزوجته عن إغلاق الباب. وبقي الباب مشروعاً في وجه الريح والبرد والشرد وطوارئ الحدثان. وحدث تلك الليلة مطر غزير وزمهرير، فقبع الرجل في إحدى القواني، وراح يتصرصر ويتمرمر، وانزوت المرأة في إحدى الزوايا وأخذت تتكزكز وتتقرقر، حتى ساعة متأخرة من الليل. ثم تنحنحت أم صافي، وقالت "يا أبا صافي، قولك حدا بيسمعنا إذا جيت حاكيتك كلميتن؟" قال: "ولا حدا بيقشعنا!"."
لعلّ هذا الكتاب الفريد لسلام الراسي هو أروع ما خطّته براعته من مأثورات الأدب الشعبي. فيه حكايات قرويّة معتّقة، يعيش القارىء في أجوائها ساعات من الجذل وانشراح الخاطر مع أبو مقبل في مطحنته، والحاجّ حنّا في دكّانه، والنادبة العمياء في مآتم القرية، ومع الشاعر المجنون عبدالله نصّار والشمّاس أبو سعدى والشيخ أبو حمد والخوري شكرالله وسواهم من الأبطال، وهم جميعًا من لحم ودم.
